About the Book
GEEK DAD: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share (Gotham Books; May 4, 2010; $17) … a fully illustrated, idea packed resource of fun, games and adventures geared toward the geek in us all. Ken Denmead is an engineer turned geeky dad who has found an inner calling through his many projects, crafts, and fun times with his kids. And what Geeky Dad isn’t waiting for Iron Man? We can certainly come up with a fun project that ties to the opening and gets readers excited for the release!

GEEK DAD started as a blog on Wired.com and has grown into a phenomena. Now, Ken and his many followers, spend their days making kites with lights to fly at night, video cameras that fly with the help of balloons, lamps made out of legos, and cyborg jack-o-lanterns for the holidays!

This year could be called “The Year of the Geek.” Dads have iPads, their cars back up for them, they are waiting patiently for Iron Man 2 to come out! The time of nerds hiding in the corner is over. Geeks are cool. From Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings to Alton Brown culinary science projects, geeks are a strong contender in the market. They are smart, they are innovative, and they are sick of playing Chutes and Ladders. They are ready to:

* Build an Outdoor Movie Theater
* Make a Super Hero ABC Book
* Create the Ultimate Board Game
* Crochet a Dicebag
* Build a Binary Calendar

So get out those mainframes and UNLEASH YOUR INNER GEEK!

My Take on the Book
As a Geek Dad myself, I hope to share with my own girls some of these projects. While I have not done some of the things in the book, I was amazed at how simple some of the ideas were and how fun they looked to be.

I can't wait to get my girls into Star Wars and Comics...but alas, I need to wait a few years before I take this jump!

I particularly enjoyed the idea of making a superhero ABC book. I had never thought about this, but as my eldest gets a bit older and she is enjoying drawing, I think this would be a great way to allow her to be creative to make up her own creations.

I also liked the home hydroponics as I am always looking for ideas for taking up less space to make my garden grow! I love the idea of using 2 Liter bottles to make this happen.

This book was filled with a ton of these great ideas and I know that if you are at all a Geek, you will love this book!

If this book sounds like one you would like for your own library you can find it on Amazon! Book Review GEEK DAD: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share

  1. I am a geek too, and my boy is well versed with Star Wars, and Marvel Superheroes. Perhaps I should think about embracing these in a more productive way.

  2. Wish I had read this a couple of days ago! I just ordered something else for my geeky brother in law for his birthday. Sounds like an awesome resource!
