Guys Read was founded by renowned children's book author, Jon Scieszka. We're big fans of Scieszka's work, especially The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and the Time Warp Trio chapter book series. Recently, Book Dads featured Jon Scieszka on his book blog tour for his new book, Spaceheadz.
The mission of Guys Read is to help boys become lifelong readers. While research shows boys are having trouble reading and not having success at reading, the good news is that boys will read and will enjoy reading if given something to read of interest to them.
The biggest section of the site has listings of recommended books for boys. The lists have really cool headings like: "At Least One Explosion," "How To Build Stuff," and "Outer Space, but without Aliens." Readers are also asked to suggest books which should be added to the list. Guys Read also has a section called Guys Listen as listening to stories is also a great way to develop literacy as well.
Guys Read also has a resources section where it recommends Books For Anyone Who Cares About Guys. There is an excellent listing of books here and I hope to review some of these for Book Dads in the future.
If you see the value and benefits of the Guys Read program, you can also start a Guys Read Field Office in your local community. Instructions for starting a program are on the website. There's also a map to see if there's already a program in place in your community.
You can follow Guys Read onĀ Twitter.
