Throwback Thursday: The Monster At The End of This Book

grover 261x300 Throwback Thursday: The Monster At The End of This BookHello everybodeeeee and welcome to another edition of Throwback Thursday! For this week, I'm featuring one of my favorite books as a kid:  Sesame Street's The Monster At The End of This Book. As a kid (and still today), I was a huge fan of Sesame Street and Grover was my favorite character. I loved Super Grover especially and would run around the house pretending I was him all the time. My wife is also a big fan of Sesame Street and we have definitely passed on our love of the Street to our daughter Tessa.

I had forgotten all about this book until I was at the library one day several months ago with Tessa and saw the board book. We took it home and it became an instant favorite. It's such a fun book to read out loud to kids. Your voice can show Grover's nervousness and hesitation to find a monster he thinks is at the end of the book.

Today's new version is different than the original first published in 1971. In the original edition, the book only has Grover as the character while the new edition (called ANOTHER Monster At The End of This Book) also has Elmo going back and forth with Grover. Elmo is eager to see the monster and Grover pleads Elmo to not turn the pages. I don't mind Elmo and my daughter adores Elmo but I still miss the classics from the old days of Sesame Street. Still, the new edition is a fun read and works as a great read aloud.

What about you? Do you remember this book as a kid and have you shared it with your children?

  1. I remember last year my daughter brought this book home from preschool for me to read. I had never read it before! It is a good one! Great pick for Throwback Thursday!

  2. Excellent pick Chris. One of my favorite books as well. My only recommendation is to drink plenty of water before reading it. Kids expect/love to hear the book read in Grover's voice. :)
